Finding the Right Hire: Are you asking the right questions?
Every HR recruit for company as it is a principal function in the human resource department. How do they do it? They source, screen and shortlist candidates for their company or organizations. The vital part of the process is screening but many try to overlook this and end up making a wrong hire.
Interviewing an Applicant
An HR person’s intention is to find the person who best fit a particular position although more times than not they use outdated style of interviewing letting better candidate slip away.
Alex Zlatin, CEO of Maxim software Systems said, “In 2019, ‘tell me about yourself’ is still a way to start an interview and that’s absurd. The only thing you get is people who describe the outline of their resume which you already know”
Approaches to Help HR Leaders and Executives Find the Right Candidates
- Make it a two-way conversation:
Traditional interviewing focuses too much on the candidate’s skills and experience rather than on their motivation, problem solving ability and willingness to collaborate, Thus, setting up the interview in an informal way to gain insight into the candidate’s personality.
- Ask questions outside of their resume
Ask the candidate something that isn’t on their resume or cover letter and go outside the box. According to Zlatin, “you want to see how a candidate thinks on their feet, a trait all companies values”
- Ask open-ended questions:
Questions like “can this candidate make a difference in the company”, present a hypothetical situation and ask how they would respond
- Don’t ask cliched question
A candidate says what the company wants to hear when traditional interview questions are being asked. For example, ‘where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?’, ‘why do you want to work for this company?’ These answers are already rehearsed on so there are no genuine answers.
- Element of eye contact
An interviewer should want to see how a candidate is comfortable in his/her presence. This can help give insights on how confident an applicant is.
Hiring the right person is dependent on many factors including skills, experience, knowledge and so on but the real question an interviewer should ask him/herself before and after an interview is, “am I asking the right questions”. Well, if you would ask us, Yes, we DO ask the right question and it is the reason we’re the best at what we do (wink).
